Google Partners With Top Car Manufacturers To Get Android Into Cars

Google reported last week that the company was working to bring an Android-based system into cars. Google is teaming up with automotive giants Audi, GM, Honda, Hyundai and Nvidia to form an Open Automotive Alliance, or ‘OAA’, which will work to accelerate innovation in the automotive sector.Google already has its eyes set on drivers. As well as developing a self-drive car, it has also added a traffic layer to Google Maps, sourced from other Android users, to inform users about traffic jams and other road issues.

In a multi-screen world, switching between our different devices should be easy and seamless. Common platforms allow users a unified experience across phones, tablets & PC. But the car is something which hasn’t looked at in much detail. With the establishment of the OAA, it should mean that all music, apps and more will find a way onto the dashboard to use with the car’s built-in controls and display. This will also likely mean that hands-free controls will be a standard fixture, so drivers are encouraged to keep their eyes on the road rather than play with buttons on their smartphone.

Though there are only five car manufacturers on board for now, Google says it’s welcoming other companies to join the OAA in the future to help build “a common platform” for the road ahead. We at Pocket App are really excited about the opportunities OAA will offer. Our team is already in research mode, and are following up on all updates for the new car based Android system. Pocket App is looking forward to build, support and deliver applications for partners who want to use this technology.
