Black Friday Driving Mobile Purchases

More purchases will be made on-line using smartphones and other mobile devices on Black Friday and Cyber Monday than ever before, retailers have predicted. Technology giants Apple and Amazon are set to cut prices for this Black Friday, with around £1.3 billion forecast to be spent shopping online on Cyber Monday. Black Friday, traditionally a post Thanksgiving shopping frenzy in the US, will see huge discounts for mobile phones, tablets, TVs and phones, with Cyber Monday expected to be the busiest day of the year for online shopping.

Carphone Warehouse also said they saw a 22 per cent increase in UK customers logging on during Cyber Monday, with a greater boost anticipated this year as the US trend takes hold. A spokesperson for the mobile retailer said: “The UK market is beginning to catch on to Cyber Monday, traditionally a US trend, and the web is bustling with more offers and deals than ever before to entice customers in on this now crucial Christmas shopping day.”

John Lewis has also seen mobile orders increase by 114 per cent since last year, and 42 per cent of its online traffic now comes from smartphones and tablets. Mark Lewis, online director at the retailer, said: “Our peak time for browsing and shopping on johnlewis.com is now Sunday evening. With shoppers becoming more comfortable when purchasing via mobiles and tablets, coupled with better connectivity and the rise of smartphones so people can browse online through the day, it’s not surprising the way the shop has changed.”
